Introduction

Creative Coffee an artisan small batch coffee roaster in Downtown Pittsburgh. We are in the process of transforming our space into the kind of place where magical moments happen: where a local artist can sell his first piece; where a couple meets for the first time; where a young architect drafts her first skyscraper. Creative Coffee will be the space that catalyzes life-changing experiences and we invite the community to join us.

Our vision includes coffee education, beautiful spaces, intentional roasting and sourcing, and community events. We are forward-facing and we intend bring everyone with us. While we hope to expand as far and wide as possible, Pittsburgh always be the home base no matter what happens or where we go.

We are looking to borrow up to $11,000 at an interest rate of 13.50% over a 36 month term.

About Creative Coffee & Supply

The Creative Coffee experience begins and ends with intentionality. We are intentional with the coffees from seed to cup, and we are working towards creating a culture that allows people to live at their full potential and move the future of humanity.

Our customers include anyone who lives and/or works in Downtown Pittsburgh, as well as anyone who enjoys good coffee at home. In addition to our brick-and-mortar, we have plans to roll out a retail and wholesale program to different cafes and shops around Pittsburgh.

Back in college, I was incredibly interested in roasting coffee because I loved drinking it. I bought green beans from a wholesale company here in Pittsburgh and actually decided to roast it in my oven. I thought it was a great idea. It was not.

Roasting coffee, I learned, produces so much smoke that it spills out from the roaster and it like burnt popcorn. My house smelled like old movie theater popcorn for a week. My parents were not happy. But when I had tried the coffee, it actually was very good. So I decided to invest in a small residential tabletop roaster to continue this newfound hobby.

Once I was doing it more consistently, I started giving it out to my friends and family to try. Since they also enjoyed it, I decided to take it to market and start serving my coffees at different events around Pittsburgh. It was getting some good traction and I had a lot of good feedback.

After a few years of doing this, I knew I wanted to open a shop here in Pittsburgh. I reached out to my friends that own Crazy Mocha and asked if I could just pick their brain on how and what I would need to open a shop. They came back and said that they actually wanted to let go of their location on Smithfield Street. Three weeks later I took over this location and started transforming it into the home of Creative Coffee & Supply.

Since that takeover, we have actually achieved double the sales that Crazy Mocha reported, and this is without doing any type of marketing. Once we are finished with all of these renovations and we’re able to market, Creative Coffee is expected to really take off.

Creative Coffee & Supply is beyond a business; it is a creative hub for the future. We believe that our culture will move Pittsburgh and its people into the future. Our hope is that people from all walks of life will come into this place and walk out with a better hope and future than when they walked in.

Part of our funding will go toward replacing this furniture.

This place exists to invest in the future. With that said, we hope to throw many events here to invite people in for multiple forms of art and creativity, educate people on coffee, sell different types of merchandise and local art, and become a meeting place for people.

Our plan for the next few years will be to open 3 to 4 locations here in Pittsburgh before expanding to other cities, and perhaps one day, other countries. This is only a small glimpse of what we hope to do and we want to move as quickly as possible to keep moving forward.

Fast Facts

  • Along with great coffee, our hope is to create a community of people wanting to move into the future of themselves. Meaning we will have a safe and encouraging environment for people from all walks of life to come in and feel the motivation to become what they dream to move forward to.
  • Our coffees will be roasted in-house and will be sourced from some of the best coffee farms we know of. We plan to build relationships with farmers to create a direct source for our coffees.
  • Educating our community on coffee will be a huge part of who we are. Offering roasting and extraction based classes are going to be what welcomes a new wave of coffee drinkers.
  • Events are going to be a norm for us at Creative Coffee. Our space is huge and we will use it for artists, music, and creativity in whatever ways we can think of.
  • We strongly believe that we are on the forefront of what is happening in Downtown Pittsburgh, specifically on Smithfield Street. There is so much opportunity to grow here and welcome other businesses into the area. Currently, there are only a handful of shops that are located in the specific area that we area and most of them close by 4 o’clock. This gives us a huge opportunity to stay open late and actually start to create a place where people can stay downtown later hours and enjoy different events and coffee! The hope is to start a trend and welcome the community into our home.
  • We hear so much about how the students at Point Park University do not have many places to go to in the evening, there are not many shops that offer discounts to them, and there's not much to do besides events that may happen on campus. Creative Coffee is the answer to all of these problems. We will be open late for students, we will have events for them to come enjoy, and we offer a discount for Point Park!
  • We only welcome the future with a kind heart. Our goal is to help grow the community of Pittsburgh in any way possible. With so much going on in this world and specifically in Pittsburgh, we hope to become an epicenter that welcomes the future of Pittsburgh and unites us as a people.

The Project

We are currently raising funds for our space. We need new furniture, some new signage, and a space for our coffee roaster. We would also like to consolidate some of our debt. All other monies will be to help with investing in upfront merchandise costs so that we can continue to create items that people want and enjoy outside of a traditional cup of coffee.

With new furniture, we will make our customers feel more comfortable. It will also help build out our aesthetic, drawing people in and making the Creative Coffee experience more memorable. While we were fortunate to inherit some furniture from Crazy Mocha, it is important to develop our own vibe.

The new signage will draw foot traffic in, and will help with our social media branding strategy. With a sign worth of Instagram, we can have our customers help with the marketing process. It will also serve to attract more millennial customers.

After implementing these changes, we’d like to move our roaster from Carmen’s house to a better space in Pittsburgh. We are looking into the X factory here in Pittsburgh because they are familiar with coffee roasting in a co-working space that they have. Given how much growth we’ve seen from how little we’ve done, I genuinely believe that these changes will catapult Creative into the future and towards greatness.

About the Owner

Graduating from Robert Morris University with a degree in Photography and Graphic Design, Carmen Swasey has a deep passion for art and creativity.  Pittsburgh born and bred, bleeding Black and Gold as they would say, Carmen found a love for coffee and art from a younger age. His Father, Michael Swasey, always had a pot of coffee brewed in their home that gave Carmen comfort for all troubles. He always knew that no matter what happened, he could always run home, smell the aroma of coffee, and converse with his family about anything that was troubling or beautiful to him. His passion for coffee grew as his love for art and the future did. Carmen is a futuristic thinker in all aspects. Thinking about what is next is a forefront for his passions in the coffee and art world. Creative Coffee & Supply was born out of this passion and created to become a place for all people to walk in and feel the same comfort that he did as a young man.

“There is a beautiful combination for a community of people that is being fueled by caffeine and driven by desire to move into a future that welcomes creativity, beauty, and innovation.”
