Overview

Studio IPlay is an indoor playground that offers art classes for kids––not fine art, but fun art. What makes our play place unique is the fact that we are a small intimate environment that caters to children under 10 years old with art and engaging play.

As the only Black-owned indoor playground in the area, we have coined the term Paint & Play. Paint & Play – which is only offered at Studio IPlay – inspires self-expression and creativity through artwork and play. We offer Paint & Play birthday parties, in which we provide food, decorations, and entertainment.

Picture this: a Mickey Mouse mascot character (or pretty much any other character you could think of ) comes out and says hi while kids and parents paint Mickey Mouse. While the canvas dries, they can play in our play area and grab lunch from our concession area.

In addition, we bring our services to local school districts. We have found a unique niche that has proven to be immensely popular in the community and the surrounding areas.

Paint & Play is our version of the paint and sip concept, but we play instead of drink wine! Our birthday parties really stand out. We offer fully themed decorations, food, an open play space, and a paint session; all parents have to do is show up and bring a cake. We have everything covered: space, food, entertainment, and even face painting. We keep everything inhouse!

To keep our place sanitized (but chemical-free!), and to build up some working capital, we are raising $25,000. There is a six month interest-only period at 3.75%, followed by a 30 month fully-amortizing period at 9.50%. The campaign ends on August 17, 2020 at 11:59pm.

We offer a fun and safe space for kids under 10 to play!

The Project

$7500: Rent and insurance
$5000: New equipment and cleaning equipment to keep COVID away while protecting our children from dangerous chemicals – air disinfectant machine, steam spray machine hand sanitizer stations, PPE, equipment room dividers
$2500: Play equipment
$2500: New decorations
$5000: Marketing and advertising

We will focus on having a private experience with our parties and we will offer scheduling for playdates. This will allow us to thoroughly sanitize the space, making parents and guest feel more comfortable about using our space. In addition, this will separate us from our competitors, which are really large facilities. We capitalize on the fact that we are small and intimate.

As a result of the COVID-19 public health emergency, I was forced to close the doors to my business in March. All events scheduled after mid-March were cancelled, and all the money was refunded. This left me unable to pay the rent on the building for the past three months. I am also the mother of a young daughter and a caregiver to my parents, both whom were stricken with the virus.

Despite reopening efforts, new restrictions for appropriate social distancing have a direct impact on how my business operates in the future. It is imperative that I keep my business viable and safe for my patrons. I simply cannot reopen without financial resources. The COVID-19 shut down has left me behind in all of my bills to the lack of income. The health crisis means I must restructure my business model, and I will require financial assistance in order to do so.

Planning a birthday party has never been easier. We provide the decorations, the characters, and the fun!

History

I decided to open an indoor playground near the city of Detroit because I was tired of driving 30 miles away so that my four year-old daughter could play during the harsh Michigan winters. When we first opened up, I had so many ideas of who I wanted us to be. I wanted to teach foreign languages, develop a passport club, create a babysitting club, and offer paint classes and yoga classes. To say the least, I was everywhere. The name was Our Little Big World.

After three years in business, my landlord sold the building that housed the space I had put all of my life savings into. I was devastated to have been brought down by a simple clause in a lease, but learned a valuable lesson about entrepreneurship: always have an attorney look over everything.

That was when I moved to Coolidge Hwy. What I thought was a loss turned into a blessing. I found a better space and, five years ago, opened Studio IPlay. Now that I was an expert in my field, I decided to narrow my niche down to Paint Play Party. That is what we are known for, and that is why we are loved. We have grown so much in the community and people look forward to celebrating with us, whether for a birthday party or just a paint session with their child.

My vision for Studio IPlay is to have a model that I can completely duplicate throughout the city. I believe every community will find value in this business model.

We are the only indoor playground that offers art classes.
