Overview

Swedesboro Brewing Company (SBC) is a taproom brewery based in South Jersey, specifically Gloucester County, New Jersey (NJ). It is the first brewery established in Swedesboro and the immediate surrounding area of Woolwich Township. Swedesboro is home to over 2,500 people and Woolwich Township has a population of approximately 12,500 people. Collectively, this area of South Jersey has grown by more than 20% over the last decade, as compared with a modest 2.5% increase in the NJ population overall. Additionally, approximately one-third (32.5%) of residents of Swedesboro and Woolwich Township are between the ages of 25 and 44 years, which is the average age range of regular craft beer drinkers in the United States. These data indicate that the geographic area in which SBC resides is a ripe demographic target for the craft brewing industry.

Swedesboro Brewing Company strives to produce exceptional beer of the highest quality that is rooted in the rich history of traditional brewing. Our craft beers are inspired by the unique history of Swedesboro and each beer has its own backstory that pays homage to the area. The company’s current product line of eleven (11) beers includes traditional beer styles, such as Lager and Pilsner, as well as top styles that are flourishing in the marketplace, including American-Style IPA and Juicy (Hazy) IPA, with plans to add more beer styles in the near future. Each beer is hand-crafted using time-honored methodologies, state-of-the-art brewing equipment, and the finest natural ingredients from the tri-state area and around the world.

The target customers for SBC are men and women of legal-drinking age that are already regular craft beer drinkers and those who have an affinity for historic beer styles, as well as food and beverage businesses that sell beer for dining or retail. Using a multi-tiered method, SBC sells directly to customers through on-site taproom sales and carry-outs at the brewery, and sells indirectly through self-distribution to retailers including restaurants, bars, and liquor stores. Although SBC originally planned to generate approximately 60% of beers sales directly from taproom sales, with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SBC business model has changed to generate approximately 75% of beer sales from carry-outs (e.g., cans, crowlers, and online purchases) and local distribution, with the other 25% generated from in-person taproom sales. Notwithstanding the unfortunate occurrence of the pandemic, this presents a serendipitous opportunity for SBC to increase beer sales in the culinary industry and to reach regional communities with expanded distribution as well.

We are raising $150,000 at an interest rate of 9.50%, paid over a 36 month term.

The Project

As previously indicated, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, SBC needs to pivot its business model to invest more capital into self-distribution, including buying equipment and procuring services for kegging and canning. Additionally, the pandemic has driven up costs – by about 30% – associated with the start-up of the brewery including, but not limited to, building materials and contractor services, whereby monies invested by the owners had to be reallocated to cover these inflated expenses. As such, the funds raised by this campaign will be allocated primarily to brewhouse equipment, production, and operations including costs associated with self-distribution services such as mobile canning.

Craft beer and food have long been paired together, and in the last decade, that relationship has grown even closer. Both the craft beer and culinary industries are experiencing a historic period of growth and recognition in local and national communities. With myriad restaurants stocking craft beer alongside wine in their cellars and offering a multitude of beer selections on their menus, craft beer has finally entered the mainstream of the culinary world. This presents an excellent opportunity for capital investment in SBC, as the company plans to grow and sustain it business by allocating the funds raised by this campaign to local distribution of cans and kegs to restaurants, bars, and taverns that sell food to community residents. Additionally, the funds will allow SBC to improve its business by expanding distribution to selected areas within the State of NJ. The sign of the times indicates that today—more than ever—diners want craft beer at the table. Swedesboro Brewing Company is poised to meet this demand by producing a wide variety of beer styles and flavorful options that not only are desirable to beer consumers but also to diners seeking to pair craft beer with a host of food options.

Business

History

Swedesboro Brewing Company was co-founded by Marvin Bowe and Kevin Bain in 2020, originating from their passion for craft beer and decades of experience in home brewing. Like many brewery owners, they did not begin their careers in the brewing industry. To appreciate how they ended up partnering to make SBC a reality, we take a step back to learn who they are and where they came from.

Both Kevin and Marvin were raised in Philadelphia neighborhoods. Like many kids, they competed in local sports, hung out in recreational centers, and forged countless bonds with family and friends, which have stood the test of time. As they both matured into young adults, their ambitions grew and their quest for achieving something greater began. For Kevin, his scientific aptitude and scholarly successes led him to a 20-year career as a healthcare professional and adjunct faculty at the University of the Sciences, where he continues to educate on scientific advances and medical breakthroughs. For Marvin, his creativity and artistic talents led him to pursue a career in commercial arts and art education. Marvin spent over 20 years in the field of advertising, leading several agencies as a Creative Director, during which time he also taught art at his Alma Mater, Northeast Catholic High School.

With each having over 20 years of business leadership experience, they both learned how to build successful businesses but, more importantly, they learned that passion and enthusiasm are just as important as talent and education. It is their past experiences and ongoing passions that forged the road to craft brewing in Swedesboro.

When you visit the SBC taproom, Marvin will make time to share with you the history of the company and its beers. He has a knack for storytelling and is passionate about giving back to the community where he resides. When you tour the SBC brewhouse, Kevin will guide you through its brewing operations and beer experimentations – The Laboratory. He is an excellent instructor but also listens intently to figure out what SBC customers want from their craft beer. Suffice to say, the founders are as multifaceted as the beer they are brewing.

It has been said that craft brewing resides at the intersection of art and science. Meeting at these crossroads, SBC creative and scientific founders, Marvin and Kevin, are determined to break the mold. Together, their creative expertise and scientific acumen have shaped the company’s mission to craft beer that is steeped in the tradition of brewing (scientific) yet tells a story and pays homage to the unique history of their community (creative).

The Future

The brewhouse of SBC is composed of a combi-vessel with a 10-BBL cold wort cast out and a 15-BBL hot liquor tank along with five 10-BBL fermenting tanks and six 10-BBL serving tanks, among other production equipment. Based on the size of the leased premises, the brewhouse has the capacity to expand production by adding three to five more 5- or 10-BBL fermenting tanks and two to three more 5- or 10-BBL serving tanks. Suffice to say, the owners plan to expand beer production over the next 1 to 3 years.

In addition to their beers, the company plans to produce a line of non-alcoholic beverages, starting with a traditional Root Beer in the first year and eventually a Ginger Beer and others. This product line will be targeted to customers of non-legal drinking age (e.g., children) who accompany their families to SBC, as well as to customers who want to enjoy an age-old, non-alcoholic beverage while socializing with other brewery patrons. Additionally, in subsequent years, SBC plans to add other beer styles to their product line and beers that are lighter in calories as well as seltzers and/or fruit beers. These future plans will be determined by customer demand and brewery capacity, as well as other factors at the time of planning.

As the company grows, SBC plans to add an Assistant Brewer to aid the Head Brewer with production and a Quality Manager to assist the Brewhouse Manager with quality assurance and quality control. The company also plans to add at least one Sales Representative to assist the brewery with account coordination and management. This individual will also provide company social media and online marketing support. As a central part of their growth strategy, the owners of SBC plan to hire local residents to fill these positions, drawing from the talent in their community.
