2nd Semester Consignment Shop

29302 Euclid Avenue Cleveland United States, OH 44092 Cleveland

Introduction

2nd Semester Consignment & Resource Shop is a local shop that provides a convenient, safe, and economical option for educators to buy and sell resources to create long-lasting experiences for all children...while making a little extra cash. We are the first and only consignment store in the country that caterers to educators. With the support of local educators, parents, and community members, valuable resources are kept in the classroom. The monies raised with help extend this vision to a new location by providing furnishing, equipment, and windows and replace the awning to help bring beautification to its new neighborhood.

I am looking to borrow between $10,000 and $16,600 at 9.00% over 60 months. Anyone who is 18 years old can invest.

How My Journey Began

I had just graduated from college and was excited about my new journey as a 3rd grade teacher in the inner-city of Cleveland. With just enough money to move to a new city and begin my life as an independent professional teacher, I walked into my new first classroom. To my surprise, I walked into a room where there were few desks and the floor to ceiling were blank walls. This 23 year old girl, full of excitement, ready to change the world, was hit with what we call REALITY. I found the only local education store, oh my, I was in complete shock. I couldn’t believe the cost of everything. With no budget from my school and limited personal funds, I figured out how to prioritize some of my items and budget for the rest.

About 2nd Semester Consignment Shop

2nd Semester Consignment Shop was birthed after the cumbersome task of having to pack and move my classroom's valuables several times within a short period of time. I was further challenged to condense over 20 years of educational resources into a smaller classroom setting after accepting a new position. It occurred to me that other teachers must be experiencing similar situations. It was extremely challenging to find a good home for my vast investment in educational supplies and materials.

For the past 20 years, I have served Cleveland's kids as an educator. During that time, I devoted a lot of energy and my own personal funds to create the perfect classroom culture and environment for my students. As a teacher, I cherish the resources I put into my classroom. However . . . what happens when those resources are no longer needed in my classroom?

Unlike many other resale stores, we only specialize in educational materials, games, books, manipulatives, bulletin board items, etc. Customers enjoy having a place to buy all they need to satisfy educating their students and children while supporting other local educators. They love the idea of keeping these resources in the classroom. Before 2nd Semester, teachers would store hundreds of unused, valuable items in a garage, basement, and storage unit. An average teacher may change grade levels at least 5 times in their career. Unfortunately, with each change, new resources are required. This can be extremely expensive for an educator since they personally purchase at least 90% of their classroom resources. We also help new teachers on a budget to begin their journey by offering discounted resources.

The Project

We are raising funds to remodel and replace the complete front of the store and furnish the inside of the retail store located at 612 E. 185th St. Cleveland. The glass window blocks will be replaced with new, fully visibility windows that will create a more welcoming atmosphere. The wooden awning will be removed and replaced with a more traditional awning giving it a more modern updated look. Finally, a fresh coat of paint and signage will complete the project.

Before and proposed

After the completion of this project, we will finalize our application for the City of Cleveland’s Storefront Renovation Program. This program helps neighborhood retail districts become more attractive, economically viable, and diverse places to visit and shop by assisting in the design and funding of signage and the rehabilitation of traditional storefront buildings. A 50% rebate, up to $30,000, on eligible expenses, will be available for comprehensive exterior rehabilitations that meet the program’s design and eligibility criteria.

This project will allow the tutoring program to continue to grow and impact more local Cleveland children. We were desperately in need for a larger place to expand the tutoring. After much research, we decided that the Greater Collinwood Community would be a great place to begin this journey. Although, the building had major potential it needed a lot of work.

Our expansion in the Greater Collinwood Community area will help local students achieve success and grow academically. For the next 5 years, 2nd Semester Consignment Shop will continue growing its revenue though in-store and online sell. In addition, open several new locations in the Northeast Ohio market, to expand the tutoring program by applying to be non-profit and 501.3c to offer free and discounted tutoring for the local Cleveland children.

About the Owner

After 20 years of teaching in a regular classroom setting, I had an opportunity to switch positions.  In my new position I no longer had a need many of my 20 years of valuable resources and downsize to a small area in the hallway.  I packed up my materials and traveled home to store them in the garage.  My husband asked me not to junk up our garage with my items and take them to the consignment store.  After being completely insulted and doing some research, I realized there was no other concept like this anywhere in the country. So 3 months later . . . . up births 2nd Semester Consignment Shop.
