Sister Sunflower supplies novice and experienced plant parents with not only new plant babies, but the ability to make a happy and loving home for them. We consider ourselves "plant foster parents." Once a plant is sold and shipped, we make contact to ensure that the new family member has arrived safe and sound. If there are issues, we address them and guide our clients on how to restore and maintain optimal plant health.

Our service doesn't end there. We follow up with bi-weekly texts to keep that plant care momentum growing. This includes but does not limit: Our homespun telemedicine plant triage services, guided repotting and pruning sessions, as well as when to fertilize.

Customers buy from us because we offer quality, healthy plants at competitive prices, but plant education is one of our pillar points that helps us stand out. The end to end customer service has earned us repeat business and a loyal social media following.

We are raising $27,000 paid at an 11.25% interest rate with a six month interest-only period at a 36 month fully amortizing period.

We foster plants, ensure they end up in loving homes, and continue educating the new plant parents.

The Project

The funds will be allocated as below:

Hiring two employees: $12,640
To keep up with demand, we will hire 2 part time employees at $15/hour for 10-20 hours per week ($600-$1,200 in wages), $380 per week for applicable employee taxes. Funds raised from this campaign will cover the first two months of their employment.

COVID-19 supplies/modifications: $3,700
This includes purchasing of PPE; assigned tool kits including gloves and gardening tools; dedicated packing stations; supplemental portable hand washing station; and keyless coded entry so that work schedules may be staggered for completion alone.

Working Capital: $2,000
We are expanding our product line to offer pots, soil, and home gardening tools.

Rehabbing of newly acquired retail space: $1,800

Being able to bring on staff would allow us to service more customers, which would increase our revenue streams. Being a solo operation has limited us in not only the number of plants we sell, but also cuts into the time we can spend with local customers fulfilling their plant needs.

We are having to turn away customers at the local level that are in need of plant triage services; with employees and a strong team, we will be able to offer as a drop off/pick up service.

Expanding our operation will allow for much higher growth.

Sister Sunflower started in 2019 as initially a means for our owner to sell a few plants that were no longer bringing her joy. While curating her collection, she noticed that a lot of plants she would purchase from big box sellers or via mail just weren't of great quality. They required a lot of additional care to be rescued from overwatering, being potted in incorrect soil, having bound roots, pest and a host of issues that simply shouldn't exist at these price points.

These tips and tricks were chronicled and shared via social media platforms and her following grew from 10 to over 2000 in less than a month. Fielding various inbox inquires on how to resolve issues, where plants were purchased, or if there were interest in selling. From here, our fully actualized e-store was born.

We had a soft launch for social media on June 18, 2020 at 10pm EST. By 9:00am on June 19, 2020, we were completely sold out of 167 plants. We have constantly sold out week over week and recouped our initial investment of $4,000 in our second week and hit our expansion milestone of $10,000 in sales in 6 short weeks.

To date, we have shipped 376 orders for a total of 78,515 miles to 37 states, with 27 orders pending shipment, with no signs of slowing down.

We hit our expansion milestone of $10,000 in sales in six weeks.

The Future

Adding a brick and mortar location for order pickups, repotting and other plant courses was our initial one-year, short term goal. Being as that goal was met and surpassed, we are staying the course. Our lease for 7904 Germantown Avenue was signed on September 1, 2020, which will serve as our shipping base, show room and educational facility.

The securing of the retail location adds an additional revenue stream by allowing us to host classes, sell to walk-in traffic as well as book private events.

Within three years, we would love to expand into corporate plant care services, as well as supplying and maintaining plants for local businesses on a bi-weekly basis. This expansion will serve as a building block for Sister Sunflower Mobile––mobile plant shop that will have pop up shops throughout the Philadelphia area as well as offer house calls for plant styling and care on a bi-weekly or vacation basis.

The plants are all labeled according how beginner-friendly they are.

About the Owner

Kay Henderson

Kay is a lifelong plant lover. Spending time with her great-grandparents growing up introduced her love of plant life. A naturally curious child, she was constantly under foot. She's convinced that her great-grands tried to keep her from being underfoot through her chores like working in the garden, on the farm, and with houseplants.

Well, it backfired: she loved it. Every weekend she went home with cuttings from Mother Dear's lush plants, or random seeds from fruits she'd consumed squirreled away in her pockets, wrapped painstakingly in moist paper towels.

Fast forward to after a few decades in corporate America, helping business build and staff teams and open new locations, she decided to apply her tried and true methods to her own business venture.

Kay loves plants (obviously), kickboxing, hiking, traveling, and water sports. She is also a self-proclaimed nerd/geek. Ask her about her fandoms and try to see what makes her eyes light up more: new plant babies or finding out you're a Ravenclaw too!
