The Cake Cabin specializes in unique custom cake orders for every occasion, from top-of-the-line wedding cakes to a mouthwatering variety of gourmet cupcakes and cookies. We specialize in custom ability and gourmet taste – that holds true in all our products, especially in our icing (which is as good as it gets!); we leave no areas in taste unattended.

We will be a must-stop location for every local heading through town, with easy access right on Mahoning Avenue. The bakery will build a strong market position in the area due to its owner’s unmatched decorating skills and flavors. Not only are these cakes beautiful works of art but the flavor is what really counts; The Cake Cabin’s best-tasting cakes and cupcakes speak for themselves.

We are raising up to $30,000 at a 10.75% interest rate, with a six month interest-only period and a 54 month fully-amortizing period.

Our icing is made fresh daily!

The Project

Two industrial mixers: $4,000
These are essential to producing more product at a much larger scale.

Large refrigerated glass display case: $2,000
This is to show the freshly baked cupcakes to walk-in customers.

Renovations: $10,000
We will be refurnishing and staining the wood floors, redoing the walls and decorations, and giving the outside a facelift. This will allow our customers to feel the full Cake Cabin experience!

Sign: $2,000
A sign is critical to building our brand and attracting customers walking or driving by.

All other funds raised will be used for working capital. Once the funds are raised, we will be able to run the bakery at full capacity.

There is no competition for cake art in our area. We are the go-to for specialty cakes!

Our current customers are from the area surrounding the shop, primarily Austintown, Canfield, Boardman, Poland, Cortland, Niles, Youngstown, and Warren – in addition to smaller towns like Mineral Ridge, North Jackson, Newton Falls, Ellsworth and Berlin Center. Fan favorites include our vanilla butter cream icing as well as our banana and vanilla cake. On the cupcake side, our customers love the cookies and cream, salted caramel pretzel and peanut butter chocolate cupcakes. When it comes to cookies, our customers love our sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies.

The Cake Cabin will bring the area the most mind-blowing custom ordered cakes specially catered to each customer, as well as regular walk-in orders for customers looking to fill their sweet tooth with our great selection of gourmet cupcakes and cookies that taste just as good as they look. Walk-ins can come in and purchase those sweets anytime during store hours, and customers will also be able to place a pickup order and time through our website (coming soon!).

This system of ordering and providing custom cakes allows the business to seamlessly transition into the event-based cake space (think weddings, birthdays, graduations, etc.) that carry a large profit margin and make up a great portion of steady business. We also provide “Plain Jane” cake designs at a more affordable price for those wanting a simple basic cake.

The quality that The Cake Cabin provides is something grocery store cakes and cupcakes can’t ever compare to. Competition for a local bakery that provides this unique type of cake art is practically nonexistent in the area. Other home cake bakers in the area will have a hard time competing with the business’s visibility and scale from the full-scale bakery. The ability to give people custom cakes decorated with no limits and with unmatched deliciousness is what will set this bakery apart from the others.

Our advantage is customization paired with high-quality gourmet flavors, all at reasonable prices. The menu will also keep up with customer demands as the seasons change and holidays are celebrated. Seasonal items will be included to flow with what customers are looking for. We will offer catering for all events in need of sweets, with large orders of cupcakes or cookies and delivery for all large local orders. Delivery is also optional for large-scale custom cakes and wedding cakes. We are also the only bakery in the area with gluten-free and vegan options.

We will continue to decorate cupcakes and cakes with icing made fresh every morning before store hours, as well as full display cases with gourmet cupcakes and cookies. During store hours we will be filling custom orders, servicing pick-up orders and walk-in purchases, and baking fresh cupcakes for the following day. Each week there will be one large baking session of cakes to fill orders and walk-in purchases as well. This will allow for us to have the rest of the week for decorating. All cake scraps from cutting and shaping cakes will be turned into profit as they will be saved for cake pops to be sold; no product will be wasted.

We also make vegan and gluten-free cakes.

I (TJ) have always been extremely artistic. When my mother convinced me to try a decorating class with her, my artistic abilities quickly transferred over. It was as if a light bulb went off. I've always loved to bake and I had mastered my old family recipes: now I knew I had a unique gift at decorating and sculpting cakes, and I genuinely loved to do it. Everything came together and I knew I had to open my own cake shop. I quickly realized I could much better than the other bakeries out there, in both taste and decor. I started out practicing on cakes for friends and family and took more decorating courses.

Once I knew I had it mastered the technique, I knew I was ready to start professionally with The Cake Cabin LLC. I got a freezer, extra mixers, an industrial refrigerator, a double oven, lots cake, cupcake and cookie pans, a ton of decorating equipment and much more. Ever since then, The Cake Cabin has been growing more each month. I realized I was quickly out growing the home kitchen and decided I was ready to purchase a building and operate The Cake Cabin at a much larger scale.

I found an old bakery for sale in town and quickly fell in love with it. I then searched for guidance from the SBDC to make sure everything was on track to be as successful as possible and go towards opening the bakery the right way. They were extremely helpful and I secured a land contract for the building. Next step is to get funding to get some essential equipment to run The Cake Cabin and renovate the building as well as get some working capital.

After taking a cake decorating class with his mother, TJ knew he had to open his own cake shop.

The Cake Cabin will continue to provide the area with the best-tasting and best-looking gourmet cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. During the next 1-3 years, we will be growing our business as large as possible, flowing with the needs and wants of our customers. We will create more gourmet flavors and unique designs, as well as fun cake-related events at the bakery for kids and locals to enjoy. In the future I would like to have another baker/cake designer hired as well as cashiers and a delivery service. The Cake Cabin plans to be linked to the word “cake” in northeast Ohio. In the long run I would like to open a second location.

We also offer cupcakes and cookies!

About the Owner

Todd James Henry II

Todd has been baking by his mother’s side ever since he could remember. His path to building his own bakery was certainly a natural progression. He learned at a very early age how to bake and whip icing. He has developed a very unique set of skills over the years, perfecting old family recipes made from scratch. From cookies to cake to cupcakes, Todd has established a list of gourmet tasting products that can't be found or produced in a grocery store. In the last two years, Todd has broadened his skills and has been decorating small- to large-scale custom cakes of all shapes and sizes, practicing the art of decorating and designing beautiful works of cake art, advancing his natural talents and skills.

Leading up to the creation of The Cake Cabin, Todd has taken several decorating classes to advance his natural skills. These courses include buttercream icing; handmade flowers and piping techniques; cake design – including color and flower selection, floral arrangement and royal icing techniques; fondant and gum paste – including sculpting techniques, covering cakes, cutting and shaping and hand sculpted fondant/gum paste flowers; and assembling, supporting, and transporting tiered cakes. These helped advance Todd's natural artistic skills and abilities.

Todd has decorated and designed numerous custom cakes of all kinds and for all occasions from birthdays, weddings, retirement parties, graduations and much more––all uniquely ordered to each individual customer's theme. There is no limit to what can be turned into or onto a cake. Todd's custom ability and unique cake art really sets him apart and provides a big advantage and appeal to the business. He has done cakes from T-Rex heads to Sesame Street. From 10 servings to 200 servings, Todd has constructed numerous sizes, themes, styles of cakes, cupcakes and cookies for all kinds of events. He has gained much experience, technique and knowledge leading up to the creation of The Cake Cabin LLC. Todd brings a set of unique elements and diverse product range enabling the business to provide higher quality, higher profit margin bearing creations.
