Overview

prostainable ® is all about making the biggest impact on the world while making the least impact on the earth. We are a low-waste lifestyle store with over 70 refillable products for customers to bring their own bottles into the store and refill. Within our brick-and-mortar and e-commerce, our mission is to divert a million bottles from the waste stream—even recycling.

prostainable ® also gathers communities. In our previous (smaller) store, we rented outdoor store space to other small businesses that provided wellness classes or to local Etsy shop owners. This effectively promoted our business while providing affordable outdoor space for the community to attend pop-up shops, yoga classes, tai chi classes, and sound baths.

Our customers are conscious, curious, and primarily female. They believe in supporting local and they are excited to join the refill revolution that is happening on a global level because single-use packaging is a design flaw that is drastically filling our landfills and Ocean litter. They trust prostainable ® because we have sourced the right products for them and we provide continuous environmental and sustainability education. Since October 1, 2019 (launch day), I have sent out a Sustainable Saturdays newsletter via email every Saturday morning. This is a 2-3 minute read on environmental topics and includes updates within the store. We have over 400 subscribers and a 35% open rate on average.

We recently relocated to a five times larger location in July 2021, increasing our overhead costs because we had outgrown our last space. In order to bring the same opportunities for local makers to the new location, we now rent 8 shelves in our store (called the Local Goods Corner), this provides other small businesses the opportunity to be in a retail space without selling their small batch items at wholesale prices. They pay us a small monthly fee and they keep 100% of their sales after taxes and fees. We sold the shelf spaces out within 24hrs, this has helped reduce our overhead costs by almost $400/month.

We are raising $75,000 at an 8.0% interest rate, paid over a 60-month term!

"A low waste store for your zero waste intentions!"

The Project

We are looking to expand prostainable ® to two more locations over the next 6 months in the San Fernando Valley, the fastest-growing region of Los Angeles County. We are currently the only refill shop in the Valley and given our growth rate since Oct 2019 and through a pandemic, we are confident that we can own this market as the refill shop to visit whether you are on the East, West, or South side of the Valley.

Up until now, the growth of the business has been slower because it has been entirely self-funded and of course we are navigating a global pandemic. With investors behind me, I can expand faster and capitalize on our existing momentum with the added benefit of the growing population in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.

We are hiring a diverse staff and will continue to do so, and we will continue to give diverse local makers the opportunities to be in our store without the barrier of wholesale. Our coverage in media has been organic which is great, but we would like a few strategic PR placements just before the holidays.

Lastly, our customers have requested product expansions and offerings. We started as a refill shop with 12 refill products and now carry over 70 refillable products by listening to our community and sourcing the things that they want in our store!

  • Pay down high credit card APR % from opening bigger location - $10,000
  • Expand 2 more locations within the San Fernando Valley: Studio City (a standalone shop), Canoga Park, or Northridge (in new apartment developments with retail space on the ground floor) - $35,000
  • Hiring / Staffing: retail staff, independent contractors for web development and PR  - $10,000
  • Marketing Spend - $5,000 - $10,000
  • Distribution expansion: efficient delivery service and prostainable ® displays in other retail shops - $20,000

Our mission at prostainable ® is to make you feel as good as we do about living in a sustainable home!

Business

History

I founded the sustainABLE life in April 2019. In October 2019, I launched our small refill stand at the Calabasas Farmer's Market. By February 2020, I was in three Farmer's Markets WHILE working full time for Coty Inc. I was self-funding the business and learning as I grew.

I had planned to open a store before the holidays in 2020 or at the beginning of 2021 before the pandemic came. When March of 2020 hit, COVID-19 shut us out of all three farmers’ markets. For three and a half months, I made less than $200/month on the business but continued to work full time from home.

June 2020, in a time of global uncertainty, we were able to open a tiny store (100sq ft) and offered free delivery, curbside and in-store pickup. We were only open Thursday - Sunday. By March 2021, I was averaging $5,000 in sales a month which was my goal to leave my corporate job of almost 10 years, so I did.

We struggled to stock many items at times because of the soap shortage, but customers kept coming and became even more committed to reducing their plastic waste. Our customers embraced the business and what it stood for.

In July 2021, we relocated to a 500 sq ft store and we are not slowing down!

Since inception in October 2019, prostainable ® has diverted over 5,800 single-use bottles!

Future

I want a refillable product line of our own and to operate out of 3-5 stores. We are working towards our goal of diverting 1,000,000 single-use bottles from waste and recycling streams.

prostainable ® offers over 70 refillable goods in home, pet, beauty, and garden!
